Stress-Free Grooming by Melissa
Melissa is a native Floridian who fell in love with the art of grooming while working as a veterinary assistant after high school. She became a Certified Groomer in the year 2000 and has been making pets look and feel fabulous since then.
Melissa stands out from typical express groomers by prioritizing a stress-free grooming experience. With the help of an assistant, she grooms only 4-6 dogs per day, compared to the standard 10 dogs per day for express groomers, ensuring each dog receives individualized care and attention.

What is Stress-Free Grooming?
A stress-free grooming process is designed to keep our dogs comfortable, calm, and happy during grooming sessions. It focuses on reducing anxiety, using positive reinforcement, and adapting to the pet’s needs.
The stress-free process is an all day grooming day. Melissa breaks up the grooming process into steps and allows breaks in between for rest and play. A typical grooming day with Melissa is from 9am to 2-4:30pm. Here’s how a stress-free grooming process typically works and what Melissa takes into consideration:
1. Preparation & Familiarization
• Making slow introductions: allowing the pet explore the grooming area before starting.
• Using positive reinforcement: treats, praise and gentle petting help create a positive association.
2. Handling with Care
• Gentle handling: avoiding force; using slow, reassuring movements.
• Giving breaks as needed: if the pet gets anxious or is older, Melissa stops and allows them to reset (CAGE FREE). She also gives them the opportunity to socialize with the other grooming dogs.
• Desensitization training: getting the dog used to grooming tools (clippers, brushes) gradually.
3. Bathing & Drying
• Using lukewarm water: comfortable water temperature helps relax the pet.
• Utilizing a custom-made open tub concept with stairs: easy entry in and out of the tub without a trapped feeling.
• Providing soft towels & low-noise dryers: high-speed dryers are avoided if they cause distress; using towel drying when possible. NO CAGE DRYERS.
• Employing massage techniques: gentle scrubbing and massaging during the bath help calm the pet.
4. Clipping & Trimming
• Quiet clippers: low-vibration, low-noise clippers.
• Hand scissoring: when possible, we use hand scissors instead of electric tools to minimize noise.
• Slow & patient pace: Melissa avoids rushing, and always watches for signs of stress, providing breaks as needed.
5. Post-Grooming Rewards
• Treats & playtime: ending the session on a happy note with play or a favorite snack.
• Affection & praise: reinforcing the experience as something enjoyable.
6. Special Considerations
• Using anti-anxiety aids (if needed): calming sprays, anxiety wraps, or vet-recommended solutions can help.
• Grooming in short sessions: if a pet is highly anxious or new to the grooming process, we break the full process into shorter, multiple sessions.
• Cleaning and sanitizing: both equipment and environment.
• Vaccination or titer testing requirements: ensuring the dogs in our care are not only comfortable but also as safe as possible.
